The Truth about TB

Let’s admit it; TB is a scary word and a scarier disease. Maybe that’s why there are so many myths clouding it. In this article, we debunk the myths and get to the facts of the matter.
Tuberculosis is an infection caused by a certain bacteria that mainly affects the lungs, but can harm other parts of the body too.
Is it contagious?
Only TB of the throat or lungs is contagious. TB affecting other parts of the body such as kidneys, bones etc is NOT contagious.
How does it spread?
The bacterium spreads through air so people get TB when they breathe in the bacteria due to being in close proximity with someone suffering from TB. However,
• TB bacteria are only in the air after someone with infectious TB coughs or sneezes.
• You need to spend many hours close to a person with infectious TB to breathe in enough bacteria to be at risk.
• You cannot get TB by sharing cutlery, bedding or clothes.
Most people who breathe in TB bacteria do not get ill as the immune system is strong enough to kill the bacteria. If you do become ill, it might be months or years later.
What is ‘Latent TB’ and how is it different from ‘Active TB’?
About one third of the world’s population is considered to have a dormant or latent TB infection and only 5 to 10% of these progresses to active TB. A person with latent TB does not show any symptoms and is not contagious. The only way to determine if they have latent TB is through a skin or blood test. They can get treatment for latent TB infection in order to prevent it from escalating into a TB infection in future.
Usually, the body’s immune system is strong enough to kill the TB bacteria but if the bacteria overpower the immune systems it results in an active TB infection.
What are the symptoms?
The symptoms of TB vary depending on the organ affected but below is a chart of the most common symptoms.
